sometimes i can’t think of a topic for the week so then i’ll just list a coupla things i liked from the week(s).
spice - ‘all my best shit’
spice (comprised of ross farrar (vocals) and jake casarotti (drums) of ceremony, along with cody sullivan (bass), ian simpson (guitar), and victoria skudlarek (violin)) dropped another single from their forthcoming self-titled debut. ‘all my best shit’ is an introspective look into dealing with pain and it rips. it’s catchy, fuzzy, and full of that distorted nineties sound i grew up with. the other single ‘first feeling’ slaps too. the record is out july 17th via dais records.
zoom emo nites
last Saturday night was the first zoom emo nite curated by arielle gordon. it featured three playlists from herself, keegan bradford, and Ian Cohen and it was blast and totally felt in line with how weird this year is. emo nite online feels like myspace dot com but to the nth degree. tonight is the second installment featuring an all non-men lineup - suzy exposito, arielle, lindsey miller, tatiana tenreyro, and friend of the newsletter mel grinberg. based on what mel has shared with me - it’s gonna be another banger of a night (i'll stop the whole world from turning into a monster and eating us alive). once again tonight at 8 pm est - ask an emo for the zoom id (also donate $$$ to support girls behind the rock show).
this awesome second pressing of ratboys’ awesome album printer’s devil
ratboys’ latest album printer’s devil released in late february but it’s one of my favorite releases of 2020 so i’ll look for any reason to shout this record out. like many other bands in their scene they get most of their income from touring - something they can’t do right now. so pick up this rad second pressing from topshelf - i love variants that incorporate stripes and/or tri-colors. i already have a first pressing (because i’m an elite emo) but you bet your butts i picked this one up as well. also my favorite songs on this are: ‘my hands grow,’ ‘anj,’ ‘i go out at night,’ and ‘victorian slumhouse.’
courtney coles’ photography
friend of the newsletter courtney coles shared that two of her photographs of her beautiful mother are being featured in a new proctor & gamble commercial. that’s fucking rad and we love it when our friends do fucking rad things. check out all her great work at her dot com.
🌸SOME PERSONAL NEWS THAT I’M SHARING WITH THE INTERNET🌸: two of my photographs of my mom are in a new @ProcterGamble commercial and i can’t stop crying5. jeff rosenstock - no dream
this is just like his thing now, okay? surprise album releases. no dream follows up his surprise release from 2018 post- but no dream flows more in the vein of later btmi! and his breakthrough record worry! i’ll have more thoughts on this with an ~official review~ next week but for now go and download this for free and pre-order the vinyl. tracks I love include ‘state line,’ ‘***bnb,’ and ‘ohio tpke.’
here’s some shit I did this week on chorus.fm
i spoke with the ghost inside’s andrew tkaczyk about the band’s upcoming self-titled album and the struggle and perseverance the band has gone through since the tragic bus accident five years ago.
i also wrote up a review for i’m glad it’s you incredible new album every sun, every moon - i’ll edit this space with a link once it goes live.
have a great memorial weekend every one - this video is my new national anthem
